R18+ Games in Australia

r18_petition.gifviolentgames2.jpg

As it is now, R18+ games are banned in Australia. There are a lot of people saying that violent games affect persons in real life. I personally do not believe that games affects a person's real life.

R18+ games are no different to R18+ movies books. Why are we allowed to watch and read any R18+ material, but not play it? I believe that this legislation is restricting our freedom of choice. We are allowed to watch any movie or read any book. Adults are treated like children when it comes to games. The legislation prevents mature adults from seeing material that they can see online or on a T.V. show, only because it is in a game.

Banning R18+ games in Australia, is encouraging piracy. Globally, over $48 billion of games and software is illegally downloaded each year, with Australia contributing to $100 million. A lot of this piracy will be eliminated by allowing adults to play the games that they want to play. The Australian customs will seize any material that has not been classified by the classification board. At the worst, the importer could face up to a $110,000 fine. It is easy to see why Australians quickly download a game from the internet, there are almost no risks. Game piracy is hurting Australia gaming industry. Gaming companies do not get access to governments incentives or tax breaks. Companies rely on all the sales they can make to survive.

The highest rating allowed in Australia is MA15+. If a games is rated R18+ in any other country, it is refused classification on its first attempt. Creators will usually then make minor changes in the game until it is allowed. Unfortunately, there are still R18+ material in the game. This allows young players to see R18+ material.

Some game developers use Australia  as marketing for their game. For example: Some games is New Zealand writes "Banned in Australia" on the front cover. This may encourage people to download the game illegally. Sometimes game developers can't afford to make changes to their game, resulting is Australians just completely missing out.

Australians are in need of a stronger game classification system. As it is now, young children can view explicit material, and adults are not allowed to play games that they want to.

The Social Network

"The Social Network" is a great way to show people how Facebook was created. It shows that creating Facebook wasn't all easy, it shows the problems they had, not only with the website but also with their relationships. However, some people, including Zuckerburg himself, critisized the film for its many inaccuracies.

Plot
In 2003 Mark Zuckerburg was dumped by his girlfriend. He returns drunk to his dorm and writes a blog enrtry about her. This inspired him to create a website called Facemash, which allows users to rate the attractiveness of female students. Facemash's popularity brings Mark to the attention of the Winkelvoss's. Mark accepts a job as a programmer for a proposed dating website called "Harvard Connection."

Mark approches his friend Eduardo Saverin about creating ''TheFacebook'', an online social networking website. Eduardo agrees to help Mark by providing $1000 to start the site. The Winkelvoss twins are convinced that Mark stole their idea when they find that he created "TheFacebook". Mark decides to expand on "TheFacebook" to three more university as it grows in popularity. They arranged a meeting with Napster co-founder Sean Parker. Sean suggests to drop the "The" from "TheFacebook".

Mark moves the company to Palo Alto. After Sean promises to expand Facebook to two continents, Mark invites him to live at the house they are using as company headquaters. When the Winkelvoss twins discover that Facebook has expanded to a number of universities, they decide to sue Mark. When Eduardo finds that Sean is making business decisions, he freezes the companies bank account out of anger. Mark reveals to Eduardo that they have secured a $500,000 investment from Peter Thiel. While visiting the company headquaters for a meeting, Eduardo finds out that the deal he signed with Sean's investors has allowed them to dillute his shares from 34% to 0.03%. He confronts Mark and tells him that he is going to sue him. During a party celebrating the 1 millionth member, Sean is arrested for the possession of cocaine. Sean tells Mark that Eduardo has stashed the cocaine, but Mark does not believe him and tells him to "go home''.

The winkelvosses received a settlement of $65 million. Eduardo recieved an unknown amount and his name was restored to the Facebook masthead as Co-Founder.

Tasmania Super Trawler

Tasmanian Super Trawler

What is it?

Fishers and conservasionists are outraged by the new Super Trawler coming to Tasmania. The Dutch owned FV Margiris is a 142 metre long trawler that weighs almost 10,000 tonnes. It can catch up to 250 tonnes of fish a day. It is being sent here to catch Jack Mackerel and Red Bait, the main diet of larger fish like the Southern Blue-Fin Tuna and Fur seals. The Margiris will tow a 300 metre net above the bottom of the Tasmanian sea. The catch will be sucked through a pipe into an onboard factory that then automatically sorts, pack and freezes them. Most of the catch will then be Shipped to West Africa for human consumption.

Problems

The Tasmanian Conservation Trust says the fish the Margiris will target are a "vital food source for important species like the critically endangered southern bluefin tuna, seabirds, marine mammals and game fish".

Green groups, recreational fishers and tourism operators believes that the trawler will cause localised over fishing and could drive away the Blue-Fin Tuna. Localised fishing is when fish are removed faster than what they can replenish by breeding.

Recreational fisherman Tyson Clements says trawlers much smaller than the Margiris have decimated fish stocks before.

A man told Background Briefing that the Blue-Fin tuna had disappeared the last time Red Bait was fished for commercially. He also said that the fish started to come back after breeding up for 4 or 5 years. The local tuna fishing club told Background Briefing the same story: the Blue-Fin tuna had disappeared when Red Bait was fished for. The Australian Fisheries Management Authority says the science does not support that hypothesis.

Supporters

Those in favour of the Margiris say it is sustainable and it will create at least 40 new jobs.

"We're very confident with the research that has been done, with the methodology that's been employed, and we stand by that research," Collin Buxton said. The science is based on data that is up to eight years old, but Buxton said allowances were made to cover that.

Should it be allowed in?

The Margiris should not be allowed to fish in the Tasmanian waters. It will completely destroy the food chain and it will cause the Blue-Fin tuna to be
